5 Ways To Love The World, When You Can’t Be Out In It

During the last few weeks, our world has come to a screeching halt. COVID-19 has brought our world to a stand-still, waiting to see what would happen next. This change of pace has been welcomed by some, feared by others, and yet all of us have to figure out some way to make it work. It's the hand we have been dealt.

The question comes up for Christians, "How can I be a servant when I can't even get out?"

Valid question.

As Christ-followers, we are all called to serve. Let’s look at some ways we can serve, even when we are stuck inside.

35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.
— Mark 9:35 (NLT)

1. Send someone an encouraging note

Encouragement is an amazing thing. It can brighten someone's day in such a powerful way. Grab a stack of cards and just jot a few things down about someone you care about and send it their way. Everyone loves getting mail, and that is only more true during this time that we are in.

2. Deliver a meal

This one requires some wisdom with the social distancing requirement, but hear me out. If there is someone you know that is struggling to go get all their groceries, cook, etc. consider fixing a meal and delivering it to their home. Notice I'm not saying so inside, eat, hug and fellowship like normal; drop it off and GO HOME. You'd be surprised how much of a burden you might be lifting off someone to not have to think about cooking for a day or so.

3. Listen

What a simple idea this one is….and it's completely free. When all of us are forced to be inside right now, someone might just need someone to talk to. Give someone a call that might need to chat, or vent, or cry. All are ok and maybe just what someone you know might need.

4. Pay it forward

Money is on everyone's mind right now. People are losing jobs, reducing hours, and all of our families are impacted in some way. If you can, while in line at the grocery store, Olive Garden takeout line or any of the other 1000 lines we seem to be in these days, consider paying it forward. That is paying for the person behind you, no strings attached. Your generosity could make someone's day and be a blessing they might really need right now.

5. Anticipate being together

As basic as this might seem, let me encourage you to think & pray for the time when we get to be back together. Pray that it will be soon. Pray that those who are sick will recover and be able to join us. Once this is all over, we will still have a mountain to climb to get back to "normal," pray for guidance in that climb. When we get back together, ask God to give you opportunities to serve. God will definitely answer, so be ready to jump in whenever that opportunity presents itself.
